There is a widespread opinion that a person relaxes while sitting. Of course, this is true if the person can choose a
comfortable position or change it at will, lean backwards, stretch, put the feet up or prop up a soft pillow under the
side. But we usually sit in one static position while working. Static work and repetitive low amplitude movements (work
with keyboard or mouse) are causing micro traumas. The first sign is pain in the back, neck, shoulder muscles or joints.
This not only reduces the ability to work, but leads to serious health consequences, even long term disability.
Is it possible to avoid this? Western employees are convinced positively if more attention is paid to one’s work place.
It is true to say that as a consequence the science of ergonomics appeared. Ergonomics is analysing human abilities and
peculiarities at work in a complex way in order to develop conditions, stimulating working efficiency and ensuring safety.
The knowledge of ergonomics is applied in designing production, spaces, work places and furniture. Ergonomic products are
those, which cause minimum risk for experiencing traumas and fatigue while ensuring maximum productivity.
For instance an ergonomic chair is one of the most important things at work place assuring comfortable feeling. When
developing ergonomic office chairs the attention is placed on what sitting position is the most natural for a person, is
the most favourable for vertebrae, blood circulation process and causing the least amount of stress. Naturally the best
practice is for the person intending to sit on the chair to participate in selection process, because this ensures a more
accurate choice, considering the body proportions and sitting habits. The representatives of Gurda, UAB specializing in
ergonomic office furniture production can tell more about what health problems can be avoided by using ergonomic office
furniture. They can also demonstrate the furniture and show how this still mysterious word of ergonomics is revealed in
chairs and other office furniture design and constructions.
